The European Fertilizer Manufacturers Association (Fertilizers Europe – FE) has issued a press release expressing its regret over the Council's decision to suspend tariffs on certain key nitrogen fertilizers, such as urea and ammonia, for one year. The association believes the measure sends the wrong signal, as it comes at a time when the European Union is seeking to strengthen its strategic autonomy, supply chains, and domestic industrial capacity. According to FE, the suspension could weaken European fertilizer production, which the European Union itself recently recognized as essential for food security and competitiveness.
For its part, FE emphasizes that helping farmers should not come at the expense of European industry, since farmers and manufacturers are part of the same value chain. Therefore, it calls on the European Commission to closely monitor the impact of the measure, ensure that it is truly temporary, and that it is not extended.
